On my draft board, the gates and the lights are numbered. Then my illustrator handed me a mock up where he’d named one of the gates “north gate” and the lights next to it “north-west floodlight” and “north-east floodlight”. I realised that with four lights (one in each corner) and four gates (I did have five, but discarding one made little difference), I could name all of them after points on the compass. The gates became north, south, east, west. The lights became hyphenated, such as the north-west gate. It feels much clearer.
The only doubt remaining is around whether the gates or the lights should be on the primary axis. The board should lie square to the compass, right….not in a diamond shape?
Stay square, I think – diamond shape would be confusing! Great to hear you are making progress…
